Primary Research and Development
Our primary focus at the research department is to focus on long term efforts for our products. We seek to explore and develop cutting-edge technologies that may be too far out for main stream products but may be useful to SMTI in the future. Industry Consortia and Standards Groups
We support efforts of non-partisan industry standards groups such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the World Wide Consortium (W3C), and others. We believe that it is important for companies to participate in standards efforts in order to provide real world experience. Therefore, we encourage our employees and principals to participate in standards groups and consortia. For example, one of our principals has recently co-chaired an industry research group. Local Community and Non-Profits
We believe that it is important for companies to be involved in their local community. Therefore, we help our local community and non-profits by providing free or low-cost IT services to local libraries, schools and community organizations. Open Source and Linux
We believe in the fact that the open source community allows programmers all over the world to collaborate and evolve software faster than proprietary companies. We promote the use of open source components and tools in our products and services, and seek to give back to the community. Our corporate policy is to give away as many non-core software products and components as possible back to the community as open source projects. We also seek to provide bug fixes and enhancements for existing products. We support the efforts of organizations promoting open source softwate including the Open Source Initiative, the Free Software Foundation, the Apache Foundation and others. At the same time we deplore efforts by various parties that seek to destroy the open source model and associated software products. |
